Critical Investigation
Inspiration w1Many students in art classes, including myself, struggle with transporting art supplies to and from school. The picture to the right is of Elisa Goyette, which the backpack was mainly inspired by. I think that students and artists everywhere could use a more sturdy and spacious bag to keep supplies organized and clean. The mind-map above are some of the requirements that Elisa requested for the backpack, and I decided to include a waterproof canvas bag so it is easier to handle large art pieces in uncomfortable busing situations.
I met: various students that have a lot of things to carry to and form school for art, and some have to take the bus. I was shocked to learn that: It is very difficult to carry large items such as canvases to and from school if you have to take the bus, and also to take paints, brushes, boards, and other art materials to school for classes. It would be nice if: There was a set of receptacles that could hold all the items that an art student would need to bring all their materials to and from class. |
Process, Ideas, and Intentions
Brainstorming |
Physical Process
This board was the rough draft for the final board. The empathy section was one of the most important aspects of the board, which is similar to the empathy chart at the top of this page. The picture next to the empathy chart adds a lot to the entire piece, I think. When people see someone struggling, in a humorous way, they relate to it more and feel more of a connection to the problem the design project is focusing on. Next, I drew two people. What I really wanted people to think when looking at this piece is that a lot of time and thought went into designing this backpack, because it did. Another thing that I thought would be a great way to envision the backpack, size-wise, was to include all the art and art supplies that would be able to fit into it. I decided that a person in art would need binders, sketchbooks, pencils, paints, sewing kit, yarn, paint brushes, keys, phone, wallet, and there would also be room for more, because there are always extra things students need.
Materials
For the animation aspect, I used a Huion drawing tablet on my windows 10 desktop. Working with FireAlpaca for the illustrations on the board was really simple, and working on this project helped me to familiarize myself with various drawing tools and techniques when it comes ro digital art.
Experimentation
Experimenting with FireAlpaca was difficult, because changing from physical to digital art is a weird transition. The dimensions of a drawing tablet are a lot different from paper. Each layer that i created got a little more refined, because I had used it more and became more experienced with how to use digital tools to my advantage.
Critique/ Compare & ContrastWhen doing my critique, I volunteered to go first, for whatever reason. I explained my product and did a pretty good job. A change that was offered by a Reagan student was to add wheels to the backpack, which I didn't even think of, which is something I am thinking about adding to my final product. A MIAD student in industrial design recommended having an add-on for art supplies, but I am thinking about the practicality of that and how a backpack would be useful to me, I would want to keep the bag as one receptacle. Adding in the picture of Elisa added a hint of empathy, which the MIAD faculty member who conducted my critique said was a great addition.

ReflectionOverall, the board turned out better than I expected, but now that I look at it, there are issues that I have with certain areas. The point of a board is to get a general overview of what a product will look like, and I spent way too much time drawing and coloring in the two people, which shouldn't have been my focus. During the MIAD critique, it was evident that the backpack I was designing was for a broad type of artist, and people said that I should narrow it down to a more specific type of art. I thought about this and came to the realization that high school students usually have a broad amount of stuff to carry. Personally, I take most of my school stuff with me every day, because I want to be prepared for numerous situations, and that is probably the type of artist I would want to cater to, because I relate to it a lot. One girl in my critique mentioned that a backpack with wheels could be a great way to transport heavy materials and I completely agree. That was such a good idea that I might follow through with it when making my final product!

ACT Questions
Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
Because the MIAD ID students know a lot more than I do about what people want in products, I learned from the inspiration, and also the MIAD critique, that everyone is going to have negative opinions on something you make, so making what you want that coincides with the framework that is given to you
What is the overall approach(POV) the author(from my research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The people I have researched for this project seem to have a first person point of view. When it comes to artists that are alive and talking about their art, it would be very difficult to have a third person point of view, because they are talking about their personal thoughts, ideas, and beliefs.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Many times, people assume that if you are an artist, that you aren't good at math or vice versa. A lot of times, people make it seem like its either logic or creativity and can't be both, but that isn't true. With industrial design, logic, math, and science meets creativity and makes a person very well rounded when it comes to the talents and abilities someone has.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
Throughout my first semester of junior year, I focused on "the struggles and successes of a high school student". Pretty much anyone who sees that theme can relate to it and can form their opinions about their high school career and how it effected their life.
What kind of inferences(conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while researching?
When thinking about the themes, I assumed that the people viewing my artwork are experiencing or have experienced similar struggles as I have. High school is a privilege in itself, but that doesn't mean that it can't be hard. Dealing with mental health, diet, work load, relationships, and self image can all be affected by the people around you. At this moment, I am very grateful for the friends and family that help to support me, so I support them too. <3
